Sermon: Humanity’s Lies Verses God’s Truth Psalm 12

Truth Taught- Man’s words are empty and worthless while God’s Word is pure and trustworthy.

Introduction

In two short days America will elect its president.  Tuesday Nov 3 is election day.  We have listened to the words of the two candidates.  We have watched their adds on TV and online.  We have received flyers in the mail stating why we should either elect President Trump for another term or why Joe Biden is the right choice.  We have watched the debates, the townhalls, and the interviews.  We have listened as the news sources have done what they do.  Is the reporting trustworthy or as many say today, is it fake news?

I want us to look today not so much at politics or agendas or even candidates but my goal here is to reel us in and have us focus on Christ in these days of lies and promises.

I want us first to look together at the words on man.  I include politicians and all who profit from the things they say.  Then I’d like to focus on God’s Words.  Then finally I believe the choice will be evident who we should trust and give our allegiance.

Prayer

Psalm 12:title–8 (ESV)

12 To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

   Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone;

for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.

   Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;

with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

   May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,

the tongue that makes great boasts,

   those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,

our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

   “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,

I will now arise,” says the Lord;

“I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”

   The words of the Lord are pure words,

like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,

purified seven times.

   You, O Lord, will keep them;

you will guard us from this generation forever.

   On every side the wicked prowl,

as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

1.  Humanity’s Words…Everyone Utters Lies

   Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone;

for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.

   Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;

with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

   May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,

the tongue that makes great boasts,

   those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,

our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

As far as David can tell there are no other godly people left in the entire world.  Now, this is not the case but it seems this way to him.  All he has called on for help have abandoned him.  Everyone whom he thought could offer godly counsel only gave him poor advice.  He went to them for aid and after he heard what they had to say he realized just how ungodly they were, and they were the best human resource he knew of.

Then David begins to listen to others and discovers that their words are even more worthless and wicked.  His conclusion is there are no godly or faithful people left.  One ancient commentator wrote, this is a sad complaint of the corrupt manners of that age, in which it was hard to find an honest plain-dealing man, in whom to confide.

What do these wicked people say?  What category is their speech?  They are empty and worthless.  They lie and flatter, literally smooth words.  Do people tell others what they want to hear in order to be elected?  Liers lie to get what they want.  The reason why people don’t speak truth is because sometimes truth is hard for the listener to take.  The listener will not like you anymore when you tell them those difficult things.  So, most people will not speak truth because they do not benefit from the truth being heard.  The hearer will benefit but not the speaker so we often will not speak truth because we want people to like us so we can get something from them.

King David takes an assessment of the world he lives in and draws some very enlightened conclusions.  He looks around and discovers everyone around him is using their words for the purpose of promoting himself or herself.

David writes that there are no godly people left.  We know that’s technically not true but that’s what it seemed like to David.

The reality of the world we live in is that it is inundated with sin and sinners.  Every person who has ever lived and ever will live was born a sinner and sins as a result.  This is true for you and me, our families, our friends, everyone we work with, go to school with, marry, and worship with.  There are no exceptions everyone is a sinner.

God has by His grace and mercy worked in the hearts of many people and have brought us from death to life.  As Christians who are following Christ we seek to put off sin and put on Christ.  We are growing in our faith and walking closer to Christ all the time and we are still very capable of sinning.  Even as born again people we are not sinless.

I pray that the list we read is not a true representation of our words though we are capable of the things mentioned.  While we perhaps have times when this Psalm may in fact point out some of our words it isn’t a consistent portrayal of us.

It seems like what David experienced is what we experience today.  Wickedness and sin is all around us.  What is going on in our world?  One reason that we are more aware of sinfulness around us may be because we have such access to news today.  With TV and the Internet we are bombarded with events that are not even around us.  If there is a murder, for example in another state, we hear about.  Perhaps 30 years ago we wouldn’t have even known a thing about it.  Another reason it seems sin is increasing is because sin is increasing.  God has turned our society over to it’s own sin and wickedness.  We are not on the verge of God’s judgment we are in the midst of it right now.

All you have to do is the theological math so to speak.  Romans 1:18 and following is clear.  Ask yourself has our culture experienced a free sex movement…yes.  Have we experienced a free homosexual movement…yes.  Has transgenderism become accepted by the masses?. Yes.  And downward we go.  This is the clear and biblical judgment of God.

Of all the sin we have around us it is categorized by one common denominator and as David tells us it is lying speech.

We are fastly approaching the election and we have heard from polititians multitudes of lies to promote themselves.

   Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;

with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

While we can point to politicians who are characterized by lies we must understand what God is telling us.  Every human speaks words to promote themselves.

People lie to one another- to get what they want

People flatter on another- to get what they want

People have a double heart- to get what they want

The only exception to this universal truth is someone who is born again.  We understand the severity of lying.  We understand that liars will not receive the Kingdom of Heaven.

Lying is the sin that promotes other sins.  It removes accountability and darkens the conscience.

David prays that God would judge these people…

   May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,

the tongue that makes great boasts,

Again it’s the tongue that makes great boasts of self promotion.  The tongue is what is used to build ourselves up.

The people of our world place their security in the ability to talk themselves up.  Their confidence is in their ability to lie and be convincing to others…

   those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,

our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

Their lies keep them safe and secure or so they have convinced themselves.  They are so good at this; they have honed their skills to such a degree that they rarely get caught…who is master over us? They boast.

This characterizes the world of politics doesn’t it?  Right and wrong are the issue for the most part it’s what is popular.  Polls prevail over morality.  Whatever the people want the people get so the politician can get their vote.  That’s why 30 years ago the politician had a particular view and now they say they have the complete opposite view.  Their view changed as society changed so they can get voted into office.

David cries out with the poor and plundered…              Save, O Lord

Here we understand that what David is praying for specifically is that God would save their land from such wickedness.

2.  What Humanity’s Words Produce

   “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,

I will now arise,” says the Lord;

“I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”

Do you see what a culture dominated by lies and self promotion produce?  You have the wealthy and powerful who will always plunder the poor and helpless.  That’s exactly the result David saw.  As David cried out to God to save their land from such wicked speech God heard…

How are the poor plundered?  They have no recourse in a society whose speech is characterized by words of deceit.  There is no justice for the poor when society has embraced lies instead of truth.  If this was true of David’s day what about today?

In a post-truth society it’s the poor who are plundered.  The wealthy and the ones who capitalize from lies take all that the poor have.  Their words rob the poor because when the poor seek justice they discover the judges are just as wicked as the people robbing them.

Humanity’s words are lies and they produce destruction.  We hear the lies everyday when murder is called pro-choice.  The lost world contends that a woman has the right to choose.  Choose what?  We hear lies everyday when homosexuality is called simply a different lifestyle.  When the sin of trangenderism is called identifying as a woman or a man.  When the sacred union between a man and a woman in marriage is slandered by the abomination of phrase same sex marriage.  These are simply a few examples that show us humanity’s lies.  The result is the humble, poor, and the godly are often plundered and taken advantage of.

As we look at the mess that the Fall has produced that’s all around us let us now turn to God’s Words to see refreshing truth in all its glory.

3.  God’s Words…Pure Words of Truth

   The words of the Lord are pure words,

like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,

purified seven times.

   You, O Lord, will keep them;

you will guard us from this generation forever.

   On every side the wicked prowl,

as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

When the poor run to God for refuge they will never be disappointed.  We read this word poor and we think of someone else.  Here God is speaking of all people who would come to Him for security.  He includes us as well.  We are poor and needy because of the fall.  We are the ones that God steps in to save.  David’s prayer was a corporate prayer and God heard his prayer and responded to His King’s plea for help.

Matthew 11:28–30 (ESV)

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Notice the contrast between the words of people and the Words of God…

Humanity speaks empty worthless words often categorized as lies, deceit, and flattery.  God’s Words, on the other hand, are pure X7, truth, God’s Words are kept.  He makes a promise and unlike modern day politicians, God’s promises are always kept.

The difference between the words of people and the Words of God are so diametrically opposed that the lost world hears the Words of God even as pure and true as they are, sees them as utter foolishness.  The world is so used to believing lies that the truth seems foolish.

1 Corinthians 1:18 (ESV)

18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Do you see David’s confidence in God and in His Words?

   You, O Lord, will keep them;

you will guard us from this generation forever.

When David’s focus was on men and their words he was shaken.  He had no confidence because time and time again he saw their lies all around him.  Then he prayed to God and God answered.  David learned even more that day just how much different God’s Words are than the words of people.

I want us to see something very crucial here…

What gave David such confidence?

Psalm 12:5 (ESV)

   “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,

I will now arise,” says the Lord;

“I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”

God reveals to David that He will rescue and save the needy.  God revealed it through His Word.  This is a prophecy or a promise God makes to David.  Because David knows the character of God he trusts in God’s Words…

Psalm 12:6 (ESV)

   The words of the Lord are pure words,

like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,

purified seven times.

Do you see David’s logic?  God’s Word tells me He will rise up and place us in safety and God’s Words are pure X7.  So David says with complete confidence…

Psalm 12:7 (ESV)

   You, O Lord, will keep them;

you will guard us from this generation forever.

Do you see what confidence we can have when God makes a promise to us in His Word?  Unlike promises of people that show themselves to be empty God’s promises are to be trusted.  What’s even more is that David begins to live in light of the truthfulness of God’s Word.

Even though all around him are people who are wicked and they are prowling around ready to attack, David trusts God and lives in confidence.  Even though in his generation and ours, vileness is exalted he will trust in God’s Word.

Application

On Tuesday we will elect the President for four years.  It’s so important that you go and vote and that you vote the way a Christian would vote.  One party is for abortion, same sex marriage, they are promoting homosexual and transgender lifestyles.  We cannot vote for them.  Their views are unbiblical and sinful.  Another party is not perfect by any means but their platform is prolife, they stand for traditional marriage and men being men and women being women.  Beloved we understand that no one is perfect and Jesus isn’t running for president.  We must vote Christian values in this election and all that follow.

Also understand, vote for the candidate that upholds Christian values but never trust in them for security or salvation.

Be like David who learned that only God’s Words are pure and can always be believed and trusted in.  The test for us whether we believe God’s Words or not is are we going to live in accordance with God’s promises even when we are still waiting on them to come true?  Will you modify and change the way you live based on God’s promises?  Do you believe God?
