The Real Zombie Apocalypse by Pastor Brian

The Real Zombie Apocalypse

Our obsession with zombies seems to be at an all time high. Zombies are, practically, everywhere you look. They have surfaced in early horror movies such as 1968’s Night of the Living Dead and 1978’s Dawn of the Dead, they have walked their way into comics in Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror, zombies have even fallen into the classics as they’ve been seen in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. They are so popular; it’s hard to tell where they’ll show up next.

The zombies and the antics we’ve grown accustomed to whenever we turn on the television, go to the theater, or read our favorite comic are, believe it or not, purely fictional. Zombies have never, in real life, overtaken a shopping mall, stampeded a two-story building or posed as Jane Austin. They are fictional. All our Zombie Apocalypse what-ifs are also in the realm of fiction.   Thinking through these possible scenarios and planning how to stay alive during an attack are fun discussions to have with friends but this too is only make-believe.

I do, however, want to show you that there are actually beings that very much resemble these undead creatures referred to as zombies. The Bible speaks about people who have been infected with a virus that passes from one person to the next causing them to literally be walking dead. This virus is named in the Bible. It is highly infectious, worse than any cancer or sickness. So infectious is it that every human being has it. It is the disease called sin. Every human that has ever lived has been infected with the disease of sin…this means you and I also have the disease and we too are the walking dead.

The Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the Ephesian Church and he shared the truth with them about who they were before they met Jesus Christ and he literally calls them the walking dead…
Ephesians 2:1-3 (ESV)
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

In zombie lore, healthy people are infected with the “zombie virus” and become the undead, however in reality, everyone is born with the disease called sin. We don’t catch it but it’s passed down to us from our parents who were also infected. So, in a real sense, we begin life as dead people. We walk and talk and breathe but according to God we are spiritually dead, 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.

How did the human race get in this dilemma? I’d like to tell you how it all began. God created mankind and He called His creation, very good. The first humans, named Adam and Eve were not infected with the deadly virus called sin. They lived very happy and fulfilled lives with each other and with God. He gave them everything they needed.

They had a perfect relationship with each other and with God. They lived in a perfect place called the Garden of Eden. They cared for the garden and loved to eat from all the fruit God had given them. God also gave them one rule to follow. This rule was that they were not to eat of the one tree called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God said that they could have all the other thousands of trees to eat from but the one tree was to be avoided. He said that if they ate from the fruit of that tree they would surely die.
Genesis 2:15-17 (ESV)
15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Then, one day, Satan entered the garden in the form of a serpent. He told Eve the exact opposite of what God said. He told Eve that she would not die if she ate from the one tree but instead her eyes would be opened and she would be like God. He was trying to make her think that God was restrictive and not generous. He convinced her that God was not being truthful and that He was withholding good things from them that they could have if they just listened to him. Most importantly, Satan told them that they would not surely die.
Genesis 3:4 (ESV)
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

God said they would surely die and Satan said they would not surely die. One was telling the truth and one was lying. Do you know how you can tell that the devil is the one lying? Every funeral you ever attend is proof that Satan is the liar. They did surely die and every person since has been infected with the sin virus and throughout history, all people everywhere, surely die. People die physically but even more significant, people die spiritually.

Since every person is born infected, every person will die of this disease called sin. Notice how the Bible uses terms that indicate sin really is a death virus…
Romans 5:12 (ESV)
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Because we all have the virus, it actually identifies us. In fact, that virus so identifies us that we are called by its name. We are not called walkers, or zombies, or the undead but sinners. Sin always brings forth death, contrary to what the devil would have us believe. If you are “in your sin” you are a walking corpse and death and God’s wrath await you.
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death.

If you stop to think biblically with me, we are already in the midst of the real zombie apocalypse. Everyone is literally a walking corpse. It’s just a matter of time before everyone dies.

I’m happy to share with you that this sad condition is not the end for everyone. Some will be saved from the sin virus and while they will die physically they will not die spiritually. God will save some from this terminal sin virus.  Notice I wrote, God will save some. You see there is nothing we can do to save ourselves from this sin virus. It takes God to work to cure us. Because this is completely a work of God, we must accept the remedy He has given. Jesus Christ, God’s only Son is that one remedy.

God the Father sent His only Son to the earth to save those who were infected with sin. Jesus met with many people who were infected and He even called Himself their Physician. One day He was in the house of a known sinner and was sharing a meal with them…
Matthew 9:10-13 (ESV)
10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.
11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Do you see how Jesus understood this truth? Sin is a sickness that leads to death. But He came to help everyone who is infected with this sin virus. However, there is a barrier and that is that most don’t even know they are infected with sin. Most people think they are healthy when, in fact, they are dead. Do you need to receive life today through Jesus Christ? If so, please read a little bit further.

You’ve already read that the devil is a liar. He said that sin would not bring forth death. The Bible tells us specifically that it does. The Bible is God’s revelation to us and remember, God always tells the truth…
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What we have done because of sin is earned death. But notice what God has done. He has given sin sick people a free gift. He has given us eternal life. He has not just brought us to life but has given us eternal life. This life only comes through the One Remedy, namely, Jesus Christ.

Notice with me, how the Apostle John words it…

1 John 5:11-12 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life.
How does it work?

God sent His Son born of a virgin.

Because the sin disease has infected all mankind, Jesus had to be conceived differently than everyone else. God performed a mighty miracle and the Virgin Mary was found with child, as the Bible says. The virgin birth was how God worked so that His Son could enter into the world as a man and yet not be infected with sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made the one who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The reality is that Jesus was not infected with the sin virus; He committed no sin ever. So, His death was not a result of sin but a substitute death for all whom God chooses. The dead of Jesus Christ was for all of God’s people. Romans 6:23a, For the wages of sin is death was not meant for Jesus. In other words, He was not infected with sin nor did He ever commit a single sin so He should not have died. But He did. His death served as payment for the sin of those who would believe and trust Him as their Savior.

Is God opening your eyes and heart to the fact that you are a sinner? Are you beginning to see your need to have your sin forgiven and removed? Eternal life has everything to do with trusting in Jesus and repenting of your sin.

John 3:15-16 (ESV)
15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Here, in two consecutive verses John writes, that eternal life depends on believing in Jesus Christ. Now, believing in is literally having faith in or trusting in Jesus to remove your sin. He alone has the power to forgive sin. So, if you are to have eternal life with the forgiveness of sin, it centers in and around Jesus Christ…the sinless Son of God. Trust Jesus today to remove all your sin, bring you to life, and then to have eternal life with Him, all for His glory!
